Hello to every beano and dandy fan, This is menacemad and from this you can work out for me dennis is the main man. I have been collecting dennis an gnasher related pieces for about two years and would like to from any fountain of all knowledge how much should i ensure my collection for ???.
Just pewter dennis and the holy grail " RED NOSE DENNIS " are missing thanks to cinta and her list of dennis pieces. I have bought through ebay, my local stockist and seaside gift shops to put this collection together, They now proudly sit in two glass cabinets. So please can anybody help.

to be honest i have no idea.
The pieces that make a difference in the valuation would be the Red Nosed Dennis, Pewter Dennis, Santa's Little Helpers, Dennis & Gnasher Plaque and probably Large Gnasher. and maybe sometime the Roundabout Rascals
You have everything Dennis related - including Walter and Rasher and Bea?
Go for about £1000 to be safe There are quite a few Dennis pieces, when they all add up added on to the prices in particular or the D&G Plaque & SLH. When /If you get hold of a RND & Pewter Dennis bump it up to £2000
it would also depend on whether the older pieces are tubed or not -
BD01 Dennis the Menace, BD02 Gnasher, BD28 Walter, BD29 Rasher,
BDCS96 Santa's Little Helper, BDS01 Oops, BDS02 Dennis Footballer, BDS03 Gnasher Fan, BDS05 Yo-Yo, BDS06 Dennis Fishing, & BDS07 Gnasher Fisherman's Friend
If you had the whole collection, perhaps it would be £4000 worth

May i be the first to (welcome to the forums :D /) wish you good luck on purchusing Red Nose Dennis, the peice is highly saught after, and generally goes for a very high price on EBay, but Poppy is the one to ask, he is the fountain of knowledge on all things Harrop, we can only hope to be as wise as the great wise one!!
ALL HAIL POPEYE....... erm i mean Poppy!!

I think Menaceman if it is just pieces with Dennis & Gnasher in it with out the couple you mentioned probably worth around £300 - £500
Macca I think you are way off the mark I just turned away a chance to buy a complete collection yes everything mint boxed for £3000 as at current market rates and the way they are still going down I didn't think it was worth it.
Remember last October there was a current ( at the time ) complete collection sold on ebay and thta went for just over £3000 and prices have dropped since then although there have been new releases since.
When I first started BD01 - BD30 would have fetched £1000 upwards on there own now you would be lucky to get £400. SLH £300 now £70 .BDCP01 £400 now £120 I think the reason being that because prices were so high collectors decided to cash in there investments and flooded the market and of couse now there are less collectors.
I don't care anyway I am happy with what I have and thats all that matters to me.

thanks macca
in this collection i have " THE PLAQUE", " BIG DENNIS AN GNASHER", "SLH" and "ROUNDABOUT RASCALS" and many signed items, all the other pieces plus these surely in todays market and not being able to replace the older items and membership pieces must be £1000 plus.when buying new items from this collection they start £20 and upwards so how can the value of so many items be less then you pay, so i agree with you and thanks for the info. Looking forward to recieving " DENNIS`S DAD " as i still order through my local stockist i still have not recieved it yet but any day now. Thanks to the other members for your replys and hope to keep in touch.

Sorry mate you can get half of these items half retail price on ebay only last week a roundabout rascal sold on ebay for £26 doesn't mean they go up because they are retired. Will sort out a few examples later.

How many do we have around 200? I lost count ages ago....
now forgetting the fact of all the larger pieces. I think 20 pds a time is more than a reasonable underestimate. Thats a nice sum (4,000) ... and im my eyes could get alot more.

Keep dreaming if you want a complete collection at £4000 I will sell you one start again shop around buy them individually and still make about £1200.
Come down from the clouds and get in the real world and just accept that the prices aren't what they were and what you once paid a lot of money for is no longer worth it on the open market. Once you manage to do this you will then learn to appreciate what you have as a collection rather than what it is worth you will then discover if you are a collector rather than an investor. This is the reality of it I'm affraid

I have only been collecting dennis an gnasher items, so about forty plus pieces. The two missing is " RED NOSE DENNIS" and "PEWTER DENNIS". I am only aware of the items on a list that cinta supplied and all new pieces related to dennis an gnasher since. What i am looking for is a general valuation not as an investment but for insurance pupose only, as anything can be stolen or damaged in the real world. Thanks for your reply.

For insurance purposes go to £700 for the items you have that would be adiquate I'm sure the newer pieces could be replaced at rrp from local scokists and most of the retired pieces except Big Gnasher, The Plaque and Santas Little Helpers you can obtain for about half the rrp

To call me an investor not a collector is pig headed as i have been collecting these for 10 years now. I do not keep account of the prices on ebay every five minutes so excuse me if i dont know the every change on ebay. I also collect the annuals, and would like to make it quite clear i have no intention of selling the figure or annuals.
I recently had to insure my collection (less than 2 weeks ago), and around the above is what i insured it for... so i thought i would comment. Things depriciate, thats life (cars,etc).. but i insured it for what i think i could sell each piece for by average.
I was not aggressive in my reply, but rather made a comment that i thought 20pounds on average was reasonable.
Oh and I appreicate what i have, as both me and my parents worked hard to buy them for me....I did not get into this to make money! So go boil your head!!

I don't think I was aggresssive perhaps if as you say you don't check on the prices every 5 minutes you shouldn't be giving that sort of esstimate out in the to start with then?????
I am sorry if you mis read what I was writing it was never a personal dig at yourself but there are so many people who I speak to saying this is worth this and that but they are only worth what somebody is willing to pay for them yes I aggree things should be insured for a little more than what they are currently worth. But I still stand by everything else I wrote you look at how many people when the prices were good on here, world collectors net and ebay selling collections most obviously not all are only trying to cash in as they see the £££ signs. These were the sort of people I was talking about.
Yes I buy and sell but this is to help ease the cost burden of my own different collections of Harrop pieces

:o Glad i only collect the Doggie people! The world of Beano and Dandy seems rather fraught with the odd bit of anxiety thrown in for luck at this time ;) I know where all you good folk are coming from, but at the end of the day its all about just enjoying the collection (either big or small) you actually own :o Keep posting people its all rather entertaining in its own right ;)

For me personally what i paid for my collection was worth every penny. But my love for the collection trumps that 10 fold and fingers crossed i am not in a position to sell them. I will continue to collect the pieces whatever as long as the collection is going. Perhaps at the moment momentum is slowered mainly due to being sort of money.
I dont actually have a use for ebay, havent for a while now so i have not being keeping minute by minute tabs on the pieces and how much they are going for. Partly because i dont care about it.
I only need to get all the new pieces and the pups which my stockist have kept for me. Then i think i will be up to date, perhaps by Xmas

just recieved "dennis`s dad", its a great piece and hopefully he wont be alone for too long ( hint hint RH ). I have seen the pewter dennis on ebay now and will have to wait a little longer £175 is out of my pocket range however much i need it. Macca is Beano and Dandy your only collection or do you have others from RH ?.If you have then your pockets must be deeper then mine, nice to hear from you and keep in touch.

i only collect the Beano & Dandy pieces. As much as i would like to collect another range i couldn't afford it. Most of my collection has actually been from birthday presents, birthday money, christmas presents etc for the last 10 or so years, i have been lucky. Otherwise most of the other pieces have actually come from my parents pockets for which i then have to earn for a while.
Getting the red nosed dennis is not the be all or end all, i dont have it, i dont particularly want it and i certainly dont have the money or space to waste on it.
I agree with the comment about Dennis' dad, hopefully this time next year Mum can stand next to him (hint hint), with perhaps Bea as the freebie

I have to agree with Macca, it's great to see the prices that some of the pieces sell for and what people are willing to pay for them and that's always made the collection interesting for me - especially when getting my hands on rare and sort after pieces. However, I wouldn't dream of ever selling any of the pieces...Even boxing them up due to lack of room annoys me.
I also came from having most of the pieces for birthdays, christmases and other occasions my parents and relatives would buy the pieces for me, but now that I have enough money to be able to go out and buy all the new pieces as they are released, I still hold them back till those birthdays and christmases as gradually collecting the pieces and finding them is far more interesting to me than going out and buying all of them at once.
I'd also love to collect another series (I came very close with Roald Dahl), though I do have a couple of Doggie People pieces and a Camberwick Green PC McGarry, I just don't have the room or the money to fund more than one collection.
Oh and I'm also not bothered about the Red Nose Dennis - I can't see myself ever finding one, so I haven't even contemplated owning it.

Personally I would love to collect the older doggie pieces but it is so complex with all the different editions or each one then the colourways and specials and studio 100's it sort of put me off.
But I'm glad it did because I now collect the magic roundabout as this again is around my era being 43 and i think they are great and can't wait for the roundabout itself and there may even be dougals kennel and I beleive there may even be a shed that can be made.
I also have to buy the Bagpuss pieces and my wife loves these and they are aloud downstairs in the cabinet ( jealous sigh ) mine are confined to my Robert Harrop cabinet upstairs in the spare room but I get to see pleny of them as it is where the computer is.

Interesting little thread you have bumped up here Brian. Strange to read people's valuation's on pieces three years ago. Today's valuation is even scarier.
Good news for new (If there are any) BD collectors though, plenty of cheapo's on Ebay and RHD's sale will get you pieces for peanuts!
