This is a rant....
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/4161707.stm
OK a year old, but personally, as a former reader i don't like this revamp at all, but apparantly this is what the current readers of the comic like. The art is poor.
The comic is £1.20! and the Beano is around 70-80p, and i think i know which i would pick out of the two.
The most recent annual is the same, and i could'nt get into half of the strips anymore. Its not the Dandy i know or loved. I hope they revert partly to the Dandy of previous years.
Poor Korky :( i didn't realise how bad his situation is. He needs to be rescued and restored to his former self, not a wishy washy presenter character. At least he is still around.
On a side note i really hope that a Classic Korky is on the way soon, the character needs an uplift back to his former glory.
I also had a glance at the dandy website, there are characters like Ollie Fliptrik who have become more popular than Desperate Dan. And Jak who has had two previous attempts in the comic and has returned again and is elleged apparently more menacing than Dennis . What else oh yes Dreadlock Holmes, the 'first' ethnic minority character in the Dandy. erm Barney? Then there is Mad Max, all of whom along with the office people have made the comic cheap.
Blinky is still the same, as is Bananaman. Beryl is back to 90's beryl, Winker has become bricky, whilst Korky is more oval. At least Dan has Ken Harrison.
Then there is Cuddles and Dimples. As history goes: Cuddles started in Nutty in 1981, then moved to Hoot in 84. Dimples started in Dandy in 1984, and was joined by Cuddles in 1985. They met for the first time, with two sets of parents, they then became twins and Cuddles' parents vanished. This remained the same until 2004. They had a brief stint on the cover in 1999. Now Dimples has gotten 18 months older than Cuddles, and is less evil than Cuddles, but still is evil.
I hope they learn from the mistakes.

Get a life
Do you seriously still read comics at your age?
You must be having a laugh I collect the Harrop pieces for nostalger ( hope that is spelt correct ) but certainly wouldn't think of looking for a comic in the newsagents the nearest I would ever get to looking at one is in the dentist waiting room.
You as a student are the so called future of our country no wonder it is going downhill.
I can just imagine it now Macca stood at the student unions bar a nice young blonde approaches and asks what are you doing tonight Macca well I am going home early because I've just got this weeks editions of the beano and dandy to read but you are more than welcome to join me as I have a couple of back copies you can read if you want. Blonde replys that sounds great ( don't think so )
Perhaps Dennis the Menace should run for prime minister :D

I wish i could get a live, i have however spent the last three weeks doing nothing but write a 10,000 minimum word dissertation, a 4000 research report, another essay for 2000 and revise, and oh yes prepare myself for a 15 minute presentation on mental health. I think i'm entitled to moan about something, when is the last time you've written or typed as much for a lenghty period of time. I haven't read a comic since the nineties, i still get the annuals at christmas, it spares me a couple hours of a relatively boring christmas. I don't have the time to prop up the student bar.
And as for the comment about being the future for your country, not really true. I'm from Jersey = an international student = wont be part of UK workforce. Do me a favour and find someone else to blame for the current state of the UK.

When you finish Uni you will realise that it is not quantitiy (ie words in an essay) but quality. I write reports daily and think nothing of it. Every other day I do presentations to all levels of staff and think nothing of it, often there are 100 people in the room. I even had a similar conversation with a student who works for me and he started reeling off how much he had to do. In all honesty pen to paper is one of the easiest things to do in life, communicating with people at all levels and enlisting their cooperation when they are not intersted is far more challenging and fun. When I was at uni I took no noitice of the number of words, if it needed to be said it was said, I often tried to simplify things, so yes, get a life and don't follow the crowd but lead the crowd!
As for your remark about being an International student...who cares, one day people will look up to you and your response is as good as the classic "it's not my job"!!! Fantastic...not!!!

i can't actually believe that im being criticised for spending alot of time on my coursework. I spend a good 10 hours a day reading journal articles, and typing up essays so i can get the best mark i can. I need to pay attention on the quantity, if i go below or over the word limits i can be deducted 10%. I'm in a situation where my classification (and future) can be decided by a matter of 1%. Every single mark counts right at this moment i'm on average 59.5% a 2:2 60% is a 2:1, if i get a first for any of my remaining modules i can't get 2:1 and will end up with a 2:2. Its got to the stage i've got to be precise so no i'm not going to get alife until my hard work pays off in the end. When 19th May arrives i am going to my liver some overdue damage.

You started it about course work I was just saying I couldn't beleive you still read comics.
As for the last time I typed or wrote so much probably last time I took the mickey out of you.
Being a builder I just have a pencil behind my ear a fag stuck out me mouth and when somebody asks how much I just take sharp intake of breath and think to myself that will pay the morgage for another month.

Poppy, I think you are being a bit short on the truth in your own description...what about the mandatory builders cleavage on display? Don't tell me you don't have that:p
I'm not criticising, just being honest. it is great that your are conscentious, but believe me a few years after completing your course you will think about how insiginifcant some of what you have been tuaght is. Much of it is not practical, and you can never teach experience.
I certainly think it is very wrong to mark down when word counts are not reached, and never took any notice of it at uni and still don't. I do what I beleive is right and if you are passionate about something enough then it is almost certainly right. having said that there are no right and wrong ways, there are always better ways!!!
Anyway, back to my 17,000,000 word report on how an unamed football team destroyed my workplace on Saturday!! ;) Hate to think what would have happened if they had lost.

I read my old copies of beano, dandy and beezer all the time, nothing wrong with that and i get plenty of blondes on my bar!
I think macca feels that a bit of is childhood is being eroded by the revamp of the dandy and is a little peed off. Unfortunately things change which is why nostalgia is so popular. You wouldn't get it if things stayed the same.
People are different - macca likes his comics, poppy likes his fags (shame he doesn't like the dictionary though!) and les pretend likes his office team building courses.

That more or less sums it up, when bits of my childhood is getting eroded away i have to face facts, i've moved on a generation. I don't see the point of a skate board, or wearing hoods on a hot summers day.
Its like this decision by the BBC to axe Grandstand after 48 years.
i've moved up from comics though, now its the occasional graphic novel time to time.

Hey, I'm hurt...I'm no office bumpkin.... ;) Couldn't think of anything worse than sat behind a desk all day everyday and doing daft team building courses, they can become so two faced sometimes being forced to team up with people who think you are a
Hey Macca....I still get the annuals at xmas. And I think about 18 months ago there was a similar conversation about how the comics have changed along with lifestyles. I.e. I bet dennis doesn't get the slipper anymore, Dan has no spurs and gun anymore etc etc It is ridiculous because it is mischief and pranks whcih made the characters what they are...
Macca
25th April 2006, 10:32
i think the slipper has been retired for sometime, i think it was phased out whilst i was reading the comics back mid 90s

I think RH should make thje slipper as a yearpiece or something. Afterall, it is a prized possesion of dad and a foe of Dennis

You're correct about my spelling Double Topp I'm a builder not a secratary it gets spelt how it sounds if I don't know which order the letters go in.
Probably something like most DIY people if they don't know they don't find out just do it how they think best differance is spelling doesn't matter it costs nothing to put right

Dead right about the DIY Poppy. I can make anything fit together with a hammer and a few nails!!! never mind how it should be done properly.
As for spelling things how they sound I feel the need to start a new topic about the increase in use of the latest text message spelling. It is total garbage. I can understand people using t for sms due to space restrictions, but on email it does my nut in.
What on earth is gr8 and the like (and please don't reply and translate gr8!!! :D )

Although I haven't seen a single copy of the "new" Dandy I'm sure I did read a few years ago that Desperate Dan had been brought upto date (butchered) by removing his guns (even though he's a cowboy!?) and I'm sure they weren't going to let him shave with a blowtorch anymore (how else is he going to do it!?). All sounds slightly uncalled for to be honest.
Now where's my blowtorch? I'm getting a bit of a 5 o'clock shadow...
