General Jumbo :D woooo

About a year back we talked bout having a collection of Dennis characters that could be intermingled with the classics but werent deemed classics like Curly and Pie Face so sounds like the BDDs could be something like that :D looking forward to some pics :D

My immediate reaction brings two questions:

1: Do we need yet another Dennis, Gnasher and Dan figurine so soon after 'Roundabout Rascals' 'Soapbox Racers' & 'Safecracker'?

2: Why aren't Curly & Pie-Face part of the Classic Collection?

Hey Guys!!
couple of other points to follow on -

3. What does the extra "D" stand for?

4. When are they released?

However i agree with Christo's first comment;

Shall we all just wait and see before we make judgements. It may just save us wiping egg from our faces.

I must admit I am desperate to know what the D stands for can't be Dodgem and this is probably the reason Harrops feel the need to release a Dennis and Gnasher piece come on people somebody must know what the D might stand for.

You must also remember Dennis & Gnasher are the main Beano characters and Desperate Dan the same with the Dandy and probably the most popular and there are people who just collect Dennis the Menace pieces and Desperate Dan pieces so they are going to feature more than others because at the end of the day Harrops are a business. Plus there was only 2 out approx 15 pieces released in the Autumn that involved these characters the Roundabout and front cover Dan has not been involved since this time last year.

Perhaps the 2nd D stands for "Dennis"!! The range is called "Dennis and Pals".

Anyway, anything with DD in is good in my book!

Do you reckon the classics might be finishing within the next 12 months or so then? Look quite good I think.

I can't wait to snap Jumbos aerial by accident!!!

Its a double edged sword. There are people who just collect Dennis or Desperate Dan, yet there are just as many people who don't want duplicates of characters and want as many characters as possible.

RH made the mistake of going solo with Dennis and Gnasher a few years ago when your choices were Dennis Now!, Wannabees or Dodgems. I don't think RH can afford to go down that route again if they want to keep the Dandy collection going.

Any piece with Desperate Dan will always be good, he is never a dull character and a few years ago you could get any Dandy characters. Compared to Dennis and Gnasher, Dan is a rarity. I'm waiting for a Dan front cover.

BDD probably stands for Dandy Dennis: Further characters would be Walter, Foo Foo, Bertie Blenkinsop, Spotty Perkins, Nervous Rex, Rasher, Gnipper, Bea, Mum, Dad, Gran, Sergeant Slipper, The Colonel, Dennis' Teacher, Postman,

I think that with the Dennis pieces, that the classic range can still continue, with new characters appearing in that range, whilst Dennis and Dan are the money making definates. To be honest i prefer other characters to Dennis.

There are so many overdue characters still out there that cancelling the classic range would be suicide IMO. I've waited years now for Ivy, Calamity James, Cuddles and Dimples, Les Pretend, Smudge, The Jocks and Geordies, and many others and ill be very disapointed if the classics are cut before these are even given a chance.

I say bin the classics and boxes and bring back the old style bases and green tubes they were much nicer.

Pieces look pretty good I just have one problem we have not long got rid of that unpainted dog that meant we couldn't get to the smilies now we have all the new releases in our way and to cap it all when I first looked Dan had stuck them right in the miidle of one of my posts. I must say it made my post look quite good

I can't afford everything! Still have loads of classics to get that have retired, the Dennis ones, Limited Editions, Pup Parade, and now Mr Benn! Am just going to have to go for the retired/L.E.s that are essential before they disappear! Havent got a musical box/the latest front cover!

Too many brilliant pieces to get!

nah, keep the classics be just as daft changing the bases again. I'd want the new classic characters redone on the old bases then, and i can't afford that.

Sorry i disagree about the tubes, they are not economically viable, and at least with the boxes they can be flat packed. Tubes take up alot of room.

They can't get rid of the Classic bases while two of the most famous characters of all time are still waiting for their places in the Classic range:

Biffo and Korky. If those guys aren't classic, then who is?

Edit: Oh, I see - because the pictures are in the smilie box, everytime you use the word "B*ano", it inserts the picture as a smilie...

Sod flat packing boxes get the tubes back they make great risers in your display cabinet and look much better than perspex risers. I always mantain that the packaging something comes in if done well can sell an item.

I know where you are coming from with the expence and totally understand that Macca not everybody has disposable income so it is give and take.

But I do still prefer the original bases to the classics and that one I will never change my mind on.

I think they would be shooting themselves in the foot if they stopped doing the classic collection as there is still a lot of characters to do.

I do realise they won't stop doing them it is just my preferance and opnion that is all.

Poppy, only the small tubes can really be used as risers at that also depends on the size of your cabinet. But imagine if all pieces so far were tubed, there would be no room to move. In an ideal world tubes would be great, but you'd have to have a special formula to shrink them when not in use and keep them save in the pictureboxes.

CO - I agree the classic collection cannot close without the legends of Korky and Biffo included. Korky has been in the dandy for as long as Desperate Dan, and has been cover star for the best part of 40 years. Biffo is also a legend and cover star before Dennis and lasted continously for over 60 years. As Cristo says it would be shooting themselves in the foot. I hope this Dennis and Pals collection isn't going to take the classic places in future releases.

I may be in a minority, but i'd like to see more of the Three bears as well

I'm with you Poppy on the bases & the tubes but to totally contradict myself, is it not the bases & the tubes on the earlier pieces that make them so attractive & thus wanted?

Maybe it's our age Poppy - do you think as we're a little grey around the gills we like most things in life more rounded & certainly well packaged!?

Maybe an interesting way forward would be to have certain limited editions & bi-annual event pieces tubed just to make them that little bit more special.
The earlier pieces on the original bases have always looked like a better quality set of figurines to me. I think that it is the fact that the paint used has a definate 'matt' finish & they almost looked 'aged' on release. Combine this fact with the quality tubed packaging & you have a great product.
As much as I like the new ranges, the paint finish used now, to me & this is only my humble opinion, makes a lot of the figures take on a 'plastic' look.
Only my view you understand - us collectors are a very particular breed & your never going to satisfy all of us!
I think the new releases are terrific, especially the BDD range & the Dan scenario - the bases are more to my taste!!

General Jumbo! At last!

The new pieces look great, though I agree that I don't need another Dennis, Gnasher or Dan piece for a while. I think the reason they've done a new Dennis range is to include characters who are too minor to include in the Classic range, such as Curly and Pie Face, and further characters who I'm sure will include: Sgt. Slipper, The Colonel, Walter, Dennis's Dad and others. So I'll also excuse them for doing another Dennis and Gnasher piece, as a Dennis range without them would be pointless.

I'm not too bothered about the bases to be honest, we already have so many variations from the original series, the Classic bases and various ltd editions, year pieces and others that none of them will ever match.

Interestingly with Jumbo added to the Classics range, there are now as many pieces as there were in the original series, which concluded with the superb Big Eggo figure. Let's hope they keep going for a while yet with the Classics!

Snibbo you like me are obviously in your 40's.

Macca your shelves where you display your pieces must be very close together I can't quite get Desperate Dan on top of his tube in mine but the midle height tubes I could use. Although over the years I have bought a fair few of the ones they used to have in the shop of ebay and now use them.

As I said in a previous reply Macca I do agree that they can't end the classics but like Snibbo the earlier uk painted pieces are my favorites and there is a differance in the early paint finish to the newer ones I don't know if it the ageing process or a different product.

Wahey,

Havent checked the forum in a while, and completley forgot about the new introductions in all honesty.

Then to my joy i got an email off cscollectables and came online to see the new figures.

All look excellent. So glad that curly and pie face have been done! Im interested in seeing the desperate dan having two bases.

Sooo many introductions for all the collections. Probably just as well i only bought afew of the roald dahl ones, as i now have the pups, all autum pieces, and the newbies to buy. Oh and janior.

:( Shame im skint. I wish co-op would phone me back about that job!!!!!

Roll on my birthday!!!!

My cabinet is not very big, only 2 glass shelves, plus the base. Currently there is no room for my pieces to manouveur, so there is definately no room for any risers. Its not a height problem, its a width, breadth and number of shelves problem. None of the classics are in there, neither is the musical box, pups or the new front cover, my new pieces for my 21st and christmas took up the remaining space reserved for them (SLH and DGP). Thing is there is no room for more cabinets!. Good to see you back Steve... hope you have a good stockist who is keeping them for you

My mother kindly told me on saturday she will be buying me a second cabinet soon. :D Most of mine are boxed up at the moment. :(

Unfortunatly, the stockist in rochdale has stopped selling them, although she kindly does go out of her way to buy them if i request them. Complete presents in Cardiff used to be my stockist and they really were excellent, my "local one" in birmingham is not as good. As they sell alot of things and are generally not interested, in keeping christmas specials etc to one side :(

Also they sell older pieces at ripoff prices!!!!! *inserts very angry face*

I prefer tubes to boxes, and the old style paint "matt" finish they had. Looked more like a collectibole piece than a toy, if that makes sense. That toy appearance was more prominent on the "Now Dennis" collection, even worse with his big hair spikes. I prefer the little spikes and the old style bases.

Porbably also has something to do with from reading the comics you alwys remember the appearance of the school floorboards, or the park they were standing in rather than it being surrounded by a sliver mount!

Anyway, still think they are all great and for as long as it annoys others in my household I will keep buying!!!!!!
