help? who's smasher le grew??

just watching mr benn - the gladiator . when mr benn first walks into rome he is met by smasher le grew (not sure on spelling?) smasher knows mr benns name and mr benn says its nice to see you again smasher?? Is smasher in any of the other programmes, am I missing something?? who is smasher???

Smasher Lagru was Mr Benn's cell mate in book called '123456789 Benn' where he plays an inmate.
