View Full Version : 999 call - any Policemen out there?

The adage there's never a policeman when you need one has never been so true.

While not a surprise that Mr Benn range has gone into partial retirement the sudden out of stock of the last additions to the collection is.

As it seems most internet shops order from Robert Harrop when they get a order the Policeman really is proving elusive - if any stockists (or anyone) does have one in stock and for sale can they message me please

With the Clown car (350 edition) and shop front (1000 edition) showing as limited stocks there was presumably a fairly strong demand for these figures and it is a surprise that the range seems to be retired/reduced so quickly. The protype plaque and Christmas Mr Benn sold at the last event seemed to indicate there were a fair few ideas around for the range and hopefully some of these will come up in the future as Dan hinted.

P.s. Thanks to stockist Mendip Gifts for replying to my email asking about the Policeman even if it was to say its out of stock. Its just a much part of customer service to advise customers even if you cant help this time, I certainly wont be back to visit the sites of the other stockists who couldn't be bothered to reply to an enquiry.

Yes it is a weird episode with the policeman, it was one of the last to be produced yet it seems to have been the first to retire. I managed to get one on Ebay for £15 but i haven't seen one on there for a few weeks.

I have ordered the shopfront and clown car direct from harrop, well at 50% off (spending £150) you can't go wrong can you, mind you i havent received them yet.

Not true, I'm always around, I just cunningly merge into the background, keeping a beady eye on you lot.

Evening all, keep 'em peeled.

I think the Mr Benn collection is what's known as a 'slow burner'.... The Policeman is vanishing quickly and the clown car can't have too many left.

Well seems as the Mr Benn policemen will become the most sought after piece as he seems to have be sold out everywhere and from others contacting me I am not the only one to have been caught out by the limited run of this character. As well as the internet collecting shops I have found him listed on several internet sites (sold out of course) which only sell Police figures so proving like the Camberwick Green Firemen there was a secondary market for him, it does once again seem odd why Robert Harrop have stopped production so soon after release of a figure with proven long term sale potential.

As the next one to appear on Ebay is likely to go for a sky high price it looks like it will be a missing part of several collections. The feedback on this retirement does seem to be stronger than on the previous Clangers, Andy Capp and even Bagpuss retirements but like them Mr Benn seems to have been given barely two years to prove itself and unlike the others we are told the Mr Benn license is still valid so there maybe more figures despite the core collection figures no longer being available to attract new collectors.

Going by a few stockists i have spoken to the Mr Benn collection has certainly picked up good sales recently, as is the norm when a collection is so close to possible retirement.

The Policeman is as rare as rocking horse manure

I hope it stays that way.....i have my one ;)

Carla
11th March 2009, 13:29
Is the Balloonist, or the Gladiator close to being produced yet?

RHD don't wanna leave it too long or Mr Benn collectors will get bored.

Come on More Mr Benn!

As luck would have it, I have some rocking horse manure, but I'm afraid it's not limited edition. I would be more than happy to swap some of the aforesaid manure for Mr Benn Policeman.

Carla
13th March 2009, 13:23
Well it so happens i'm in the market for 35 tons of rocking horse manure for my plastic vegetable patch for plastic vegetables i have in the inside pocket of my handbag, sadly i will NOT give you your required Mr Benn Policeman as it is far far more valuable, but i would be willing to give you Five Port Salut Bull Terriers, and a Red Nose Plug (one off)....... what d'ya say?

So very very tempting, but what on earth am I supposed to do with one (let alone five) hideous dawg dressed up as effeminate jolly jack tar? As I understand it these things are so ugly and naff nobody in their right mind would want to be seen in possession of such a bizarre figurine;)

(No doubt grumpy old potato snack will have another sense of humour failure if he happens to read this:p )

That's quite a bargain!

It's a very very rare piece which will only rise and rise in value as time goes by, i think because it's a policeman, everybody loves a policeman, even a hideous resin dawg would love a policeman, well he would pee up his trouser leg anyway.

Mr Benn is such a great collection......

Maybe, maybe not. We have to take into consideration that apart from the usual collectors, who collect the series, occupations go for their own whilst ignoring other pieces, eg policemen go for policemen, be they Mr Benn, some daft dressed up dawg, CG etc etc, firemen, soldiers etc the same principle

Another policeman has appeared on Ebay, B.I.N £75

Carla
26th March 2009, 15:10
So i see, same seller as last one. Must be a authorised harrop dealer. Are Harrop Dealer's allowed to sell at above rrp? I really don't know the law.

Still think the policeman is cheap at £75. I can see it reaching a couple of hundred before the year's out.

On the subject of Mr Benn, anyone who hasn't got the Zookeeper should be buying it sooner rather than later as it too, like The Policeman, is vanishing fast. I'm not sure if RHD still have any but you don't want to be paying £100 for it in a few months time do you. :)

452 your posts in general really bring a smile to my face you seem to be very quick witted but I am also very puzzled you moan about evil bay and prices on there but you are very quick about reporting back about what goes for what price.

Tell me why if you dis-like it that much to call it evil bay why bother looking in the first place and then bring back your findings to the forum to talk about as well

This is not a critism just a question as I can't get my head round it.

Easy to answer. I've nothing against Ebay. Ebay is fairly commonly referred to in some circles as EvilBay, but obviously not in your region / area. Go's back to the days when folk would ask what the E in Ebay stood for?

There you have it Poppy, don't be confused. I'm not sure I've ever moaned about Ebay, it's come to my rescue more than once, and I find it the best place to shift my remaining 199 Green Flag Dr Mopp's, but keep that to yourself ;)

Also the Zookeeper is now £75..........well i did warn you, so i hope you got them when they were around. :)

I'm afraid I only got the elongated version, wish I had now bought the round version

(PS: If my powers of deduction are correct, the seller of the higher priced Mr Benn's is in fact a regular contributor to our forums ???? )

Nothing in the 2nd Quarter either Emma.

Such a great set, seems to be overlooked by RHD.
A limited edition would be great.
It's a little annoying that the CG and Beano Dandy collection get repeats of earlier characters yet the Mr Benn collection has several characters missing (yes i know it's all Mr Benn but in our little world it's not Mr Benn if you see what i mean!) :)

I have books both with and without covers, but considering the one without a cover goes for twice RRP, whereas the one with goes for 4 x RRP, either way they will make me a millionaire, unless of course RHD get their finger out and produce / issue theirs

(If I remember correctly, the one before that didn't have a box either and that went for £41-00)

I see a Benn Policeman went for £88 on Ebay recently, and with the amazing deals RHD have on the other Mr Benn at the moment, i can only see The Policeman and the Zoo Keeper shooting up higher and higher in price as more collectors of RHD cotton on to this FANTABALISTIC SET!
