Firstly and foremostly - Welcome to the forum, and our wacky yet calm world :)
OK i'll try to explain
Originally, back when the collection began, the pieces came in tubes. If i'm right, these tended to be signed, and the stickers are different to those now (i think they said Shropshire? on them). Oh and the bases think are thicker.
Later say in 1998 the tubes are obviously to expensive, especially since the collection became more popular = more pieces = boxes more convenient. Any these are second editions.
BD 1-29 Firstly tubed, later boxed
BD30 Big Eggo - Never came in tube
BDS01-BDS08? - tubed, then boxed
Danta Claus + Santa's Little Helper - tubed (maybe boxed)
Also
BD01P Pewter Dennis came tubed a few years ago but only 300 exist
POPPY is bound to come up with a more detailed and longer explanation :D

Nope got it pretty good Macca.
Just will explain the fact that on the back of the older pieces pre 1998 there is a small black intial this means it is UK painted and it is the artists intials that is what we define as 1st edition although they are no different to the pieces without intials, they stopped painting them in the UK around 1998 I beleive this is correct Cinta will put us all right if we are wrong.

I started collecting Beano annuals a few years ago the prices have fallen quite a bit. How have Robert Harrop Beano stuff been doing?

Pretty much the same really, the prices vary dependent upon the size, eg winston may be £10 whereas Bannaman is £25. it works out like that.... but im sure poppy nos better, i just buy them, dont generally pay much attention... :o

Generally they are cheaper than they were a couple of years ago when the prices went mad. But it is always the same don't know how you buy your pieces but I watch ebay and some go for silly money and others next to nothing depends who wants them and how bad. My advice shop around and don't be to impatient there will always be another except in the case off the RED NOSE DENNIS (rare as rocking horse S**T) I was when I started and got stung a few times then discovered the 1st and 2nd edtion thing so it cost me again. Good luck it is fun trying to get the pieces you want at good prices.

Most of the older pieces, you won't find anywhere other than on ebay or other auction sites. Do you actually have any pieces yet, or are you still waiting for your first purchase? Don't go on ebay unless you have too, people often think that ebay would be one of the cheapest places to obtain many pieces, and often they are wrong...
As Poppy said, the prices have taken a dip in the last couple of years - good news for new collectors, but the pattern stays the same, the most expensive pieces then are still the most expensive now. I include Cuthbert Cringeworthy, Softy Walter, Toots, Sydney, Winston, Korky and Biffo, in that, as well as Danta Claus, Santa's Little Helpers, Billy Whizz, Menacing Toys, Dennis and Gnasher Plaque, Beano Six O, Yo-Yo, Dans' Picnic, Large Gnasher, and the RND ;)
Again as Pops said, shop around and don't jump at the first offer available.
Middy - On ebay i noticed a small collection of 10 original pieces, and looks authentic with tubes etc. It includes, Cuthbert Cringeworthy, Winston, Toots, Sydney, Erbert, Plug, Danny, Spotty, Beryl the Peril and Teach. Currently at £127 is quite a good price at the moment, and a would be a good springboard to the collection. (Note Cuthbert is quite pricey alone).

I don't know about Cuthbert Sydney has been more consistenly expensive than Cuthbert of late.
Although certain pieces are so called retired they are still available at rrp if you shop around I see a Big Eggo at my stockist the other day and one sold for £50 on ebay the day before they also had things like Gnipper and an original Rodger the Dodger, Mini th Minx but unfortunatly they were boxed pieces but you must also remember some of the piece on ebay sell for less than rrp so watch and find out before jumping in.
Or ask on here somebody will give you the required info.

Thanks Ladies and Gentlepersons,
I have been through some Stockist sites and bought myself a 'Fourth day of xmas - Danny and Smiffy' brand new for £23.00 FREE DELIVERY.
Got it yesterday, very pleased it was like half 'shrink wrapped' in tissue paper so i just popped it back into the box.
On ebay i took a printout of 'completed listings' to see some past prices and there is one thing i have noticed --- on looking at the stockist sites i took a note of prices, bearing in mind 'FREE DELIVERY' some listings on ebay are actually more expensive than buying new from the stockists.
I think i have maybe bought 5 other pieces mostly 'tubed' or Ltd xmas ones.
I have sold a lot of Annuals (Beano/ Dandy/1950s etc) so i am just having some fun buying again (i think at 45 i am trying to relive my youth)
AND MORE IMPORTANTLY ITS KEEPING ME OUT OF THE PUB. ;)

Once your wife (assuming you are married) realises what you are up to if you end up collecting seriously she'll send you back to the pub and ban the collection!!!

Which plaque the Dennis & Gnasher Plaque BDCP01 or the small BDCP
the BDCP is still current and can be found easily I'm sure I see it advertised for £5 somewhere.
The Dennis & Gnasher Plaque should come with a white cardboard box a numbered certificate and plastic stand and that goes for between £200 & £400 depends again who and how many people want it I think the last one went for around £260. Love this piece one of my favs it was the first collectors special I think you bought it from the stockists and the certificate was sent to you.
Keep on Rollin retired this year but can still be found easy enough rrp £37.50 must admit it is a great piece with excellent detail and massive.
Hope that is the info you require.

For that price, you've got to love the piece, it'll be a bit silly if you paid that much, and not think much of the piece at all...
Just to note for middy, although the Large Dennis the Menace and Menacemobile are 'retired', and have been for sometime they are actually still available from stockists. I may be wrong, but i think Collectors Gifts had a menacemobile (a limited edition) on their site...

Both of the above sell cheaper on ebay Menacemobile around £35 and Big Dennis £50 rather than £60 & £100.
I do really like the plaque I also like the equivilent 4 pieces produced in the doggie range. I suppose it is the same old story Macca horses for courses the only other piece produced in the same fashion I hate and that is M Vision

I think 'hate' is to strong a word, although M Vision has its place reserved at the back of the display

M Vision is one of the pieces, which i don't really like as well, i don't know why, i think its because all the other pieces are so brilliant, and it does look a bit wierd, hence why its at the back of the cabinet. I'm glad Harrops didn't go down the road to make the front covers looking like that.
Oh, speaking of cabinets - middy if your planning to display your collection, then i suggest investing in a large cabinet or two, because the pieces as you collect suddenly take up a lot of room.

i'm hardcore... :D
um at the time i quite liked the piece, and also believe at the time of purchase, i went through a stage, where i had to have every piece now, or never, that was 4/5 years ago, and i hardly had any pieces at that time. Naturally i've slowed down now, due to the aging process - i'm an energetic and spotty teenager no more :o
